Who
better to talk about Dawn Hartigan than
Dawn herself? Here's her story, inspiration and
motivation in her own words…
Dawn
Hartigan at a glance…
- Author of 'Power with
Age'
- Current World Record holder in Women's Pole Vault
(Masters)
-"I have always had a passion for activity. It has seemed
like such a natural thing for me to do. Activity makes
me feel 'alive'. It's only when I'm forced to stop for
any length of time that I am apathetic and lacking in
energy.
Late
Bloomer
As a
teenager I competed in badminton and gymnastics
and was heavily involved in sport at school. However it
was not until the age of 34, married with three
children
At the age of 42 I broke the world record for my age group twice.
The record stood at 3.45m (40 – 44 age group) for four or five
years, but has recently been bettered at the indoor world
championships.
In
January 2002 I was given the opportunity to travel to America to
compete and gain knowledge from the world finest Pole-vaulters.
These included Mike Tully, Jan Johnson, Dean Starkey, and Simon
Arkell.
I
equalled the world indoor record in Reno at a height
of 3.38m in the 45-49 age group and have since
broken this record twice. The first occasion was a week
after returning from the USA in which I recorded a
height of 3.40m. The second time occurred on the 19th
March, 2002 at Olympic Park in Melbourne at an Open
"A grade" competition. The New World record now
stands at 3.50m and I know I have not nearly reached
my potential. My confidence comes from developing a
greater understanding of the technical aspects of the
sport. I am also in the fortunate position of training
close to young elite athletes who provide me with the
stimulus to always expect the most from myself. In
turn, I am also able to lead by example and show them
that age is never a barrier.
My
Philosophy
My
inspiration comes from trying to be my best self. It has nothing to
do with breaking records. I am driven to encourage inactive people
in the world to experience 'real joy' from activity, so that they
might pursue it for themselves into a life long practice.
Then
they would know what it's like to feel 'totally alive'. I believe
if I lead by example, I can have a huge impact on the community at
large. I want people to think, if a little squirt like Dawn can
achieve such things, what might be possible for me!
My book
'Power with Age', motivational speaking, online mentoring and
health and vitality workshops all focused on making a difference to
others. I want others to take charge of their health and wellbeing.
Everyone deserves to be in a state of optimum health.
Let me
ask you: How much do you value your health?
